All states (except Montana) recognize at-will employment, that is, that an employee is hired at-will and that employment can be terminated at the will of either party. This applies to managers, supervisors, staff... all employees. (That is somewhat an over-simplification: for details see other articles on this site or look for the discussion in Labor Pains.)

Too many employers (and HR managers), having seen the definition, believe that at-will employment releases them from any obligation and liability, and nothing can be further from reality. There are countering concepts to at-will, most important among them, the tenet of good faith and fair
